The Arnott Eye Centre was established by Eric Arnott, over ten years ago. In the early 1970s he introduced the first technique for small incision cataract surgery – phacoemulsification – into Europe. Since its inception the centre has become internationally recognised as a tertiary referral centre for treating complicated cataract and corneal problems. The appointment of surgeons with differing subspecialities has recently expanded the consultant staff, so that a wide range of ophthalmic conditions can now be dealt with. The centre is the first fully comprehensive ophthalmic unit in London outside a major teaching hospital. Following the retirement of Eric Arnott in 1999, it was decided to rename the centre Arnott Eye Associates. This reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the team.
